There’s more to rowing than getting in a boat and pulling hard — and Lowestoft Rowing Club member Steve Grimmer has just demonstrated that perfectly by gaining his British Rowing Assistant Coach Training qualification.
Last weekend, Steve travelled to Peterborough City Rowing Club to complete the practical element of the course, Bringing Your Coaching to Life. He came away impressed not only by the outstanding facilities at Peterborough, but also by the experience of spending the day learning, developing new skills and meeting other people involved in rowing.
The British Rowing Assistant Coach Training is designed to help people support the planning and delivery of rowing sessions under the supervision of a more experienced coach. It covers areas including safe and inclusive coaching, understanding the role of the coach and the needs of rowers, and putting coaching skills into practice.
For Steve, the qualification is another example of the opportunities that rowing can open up beyond simply taking to the water. Clubs are places where members can develop new skills, meet people from across the sport, take on new challenges and, importantly, help others discover and enjoy rowing.
A huge high five to Steve! 👏🚣♂️
We can’t wait to see him putting those new coaching skills into practice and helping the next generation of rowers get the most out of their time on the water.
And who knows — perhaps Steve’s journey will inspire another Lowestoft member to take their own next stroke into coaching!
